Infertility math and twin guilt

Well now that we are out to everyone as expecting twins and are as sure as we can be at this point that we know what we are having (ty 3D u/s), I am getting the inevitable bizarro comments from people.  OMG, instant family! (three years later...)  One of each and done! (we'd be done, and content, after two regardless...)  Of course these usually come from people who have no idea what we've been through to get here.  These don't really bother me as much as remind me how much dealing with infertility for 2 1/2 years changes you, not that I would ever have said things like this to anyone.

If I were a fertile myrtle and could get pg on demand, we'd have a two year old and another on the way.  So irony of ironies after all this, I admit we've sort of caught up.  My goal was to have two by 35 and we'll almost make it.  Except instead of enjoying a kiddo (and life generally) for the last two years (and having a nice down payment for a summer house), we've been slogging to various drs., having seemingly endless surgeries, taking myriad drugs, etc.  You get the idea, it's not the same.  But on the surface, all is seemingly perfect (so far anyway).  While this feels well earned, it also feels really awkward at the same time.  I've had people tell me they are jealous of us, which I'm kind of at a loss as how to respond to.

And don't get me wrong, I am beyond thrilled about our two babies (who are both squirming around like crazy as I write this :) ), but when it first sunk in that we were in fact having two at the same time (which obviously wasn't a big surprise given we'd transferred two embryos), I surprisingly didn't feel overwhelmed at all, I felt a little guilty.

Guilty that only because of our IF would they each never have the time they deserve to be our only baby, that they would likely come early, be small, and would have a much higher chance of complications, etc.  All things that would almost never have been a possibility if we hadn't had to go through IF treatments to get pg.  Even my breeder sister, who will soon have four under five, told me after finding out that twins were her "worst nightmare".  Nice, huh?  (btw, I'd much rather be me than her.)  The thing about finally getting pg, which not everyone seems to realize, is that things are instantly no longer about you.  Something that I find profoundly refreshing after our journey.  It's one thing to go through these things yourself/as a couple by choice, but also because you have to, and then realize that your kids will be forever affected by what you've gone through.  It wasn't something that I thought about that much before, since even getting pg w/one baby seemed unattainable after so long, though we were very cognizant of making responsible decisions that weren't only based on our short term situation.

DH and I feel strongly that our primary job as parents is to do all we can to ensure our kids are able to live up to their full potential (and all that goes into that), and I feared that I was disadvantaging them out of the gate.  I am of course comforted by friends who've had big twins (my goal is >6 lbs/ea.), with no NICU time, who are thriving (though even the small ones usually catch up), but for an instant, I felt selfish for facilitating (and wanting) two babies.  I guess my mommy guilt got started early.

Blast from the Past...

Elysian Lobby Chandie (love!)

S and I had a lovely time in the city last weekend, as I wrote about here.

Funny thing though, when we went to the Elysian for dessert and caps, we ran into an old friend of mine, who is the GM at their restaurant, Ria.

B is my age and was the GM at North Pond Restaurant when I was a hostess there (& lived across the street) in 2003. I was working in consulting by day and hostessing every night to pay for having moved back to Boston in 2002 to work in non-profit development (oh the joyful first few years out of college). We got along very well (he’s a political junkie like me, and a former Hill staffer), but our main connection, besides him being my boss, was that he was the childhood best friend and roommate of my boyfriend at the time (who besides being an actor, was also the bartender at NP). So incestuous and stereotypical, I know.

I left NP later in 2003 to go to law school (which I ended up changing my mind about, unfortunately only after having taken the LSAT). He left at the same time to go to grad school in Madison. A (the bf) and I dated well into 2004, when I realized I needed to get my shit together, we took “a break”, I went from contractor to FT at the consulting firm, and I had a disastrous long distance relationship with a guy I met at my 5 year college reunion. Anywho, so things with the bf didn’t end the way he wanted and the last time I saw either of them (after spending ridiculous amounts of time w/them at work and at their coach house) was around the time I met S. So it was a little strange to introduce him to my husband, though it has been six years...

But he was very gracious and I will likely reach out to him (at some point) to see how A is doing and for help finding S’s brother V a job in the industry when we eventually get him a visa to come over from Dubai (where he manages catering at the Le Meridien Hotel).

Exes

So I don't know if every girl goes through this, but since I'm dealing with IF (which is a defined life crisis), I'm gonna blame that. I catch myself now second guessing every major decision I've ever made, and I'm not one to live my life with a lot of regrets. One of my first thoughts when I found out that our IF was not caused by S was maybe we should get a divorce. And this is coming from someone whose childhood was ruined by divorce. But I thought God help me if I'm the reason why my beloved doesn't get to have biological children. He could find some sweet, young, fertile girl and I could find someone who already has kids and everyone would be happy. In theory.

So in thinking about the perfect girl for my DH, I end up thinking about my exes. Forgive me if this sounds completely insane. There aren't that many (I'm a serial monogomist), but they were an interesting bunch. That was one of my main criteria, you need to be interesting. My U.N. of men, my family used to joke.

Last night I got the new Town & Country and who has his wedding announcement there, but SJ. We dated for a few months when I first moved to Chicago 10 years ago. We broke up over the phone. Then we had dinner a few months later, after I met DR, to smooth things over. He is nine years older than me. He married a girl three years younger than me. She looks perfect for him.

When I went to the Cape last summer, I saw JB briefly, as he summers there. We are still "friends", though S doesn't know he exists (we have a strict no talking about exes policy that S enacted early on). He is 17 years older than me and "dating" someone several years younger than me. I doubt he will ever get married, though we almost did. We thought we were "soulmates" but life got in the way. On the surface, he liked the idea of me and I didn't mind that he enjoyed spending his Bacardi inheritance on me.

Then there's the mafia in training college guy, the undocumented soccer player, the kinky Dartmouth footballer, the Kellogg wanderlust, the actor/bartender, the Fulbright scholar... Who knows, someday maybe I'll write a tell-all memoir... ;)
