Bed Rest Day #1

After spending the entire day yesterday in the city at our anatomy scan and then OB appt., we finally came home and I went to bed.  Though sleeping wasn't really on the docket.  I got a few hours all night, as I was having all sorts of pain and pressure.  I paged the OB early this morning as she said this is the only indication I'd have of something changing and she told me to go to the hospital, so off we went again.

We spent several hours at Prentice, where they confirmed that my cervix is still closed and I was not contracting (and the babies are still fine).  They talked to the OB, who we are meeting with again on Monday.  We stopped by the MFM practice before we left to get an appt., but they just took my info and told me they'd call me back.  Thankfully, they called back this afternoon and I have a 9am u/s for Monday with an MFM who specializes in multiples, high risk pregnancies and pregnancy loss.  We are very happy to get in with a specialist who can potentially give us additional options rather than just lay on my back for the next four months in hopes of keeping the babies in and that it is up to me to know if my cervix starts dilating between appts., at which point they could try to intervene.

We are very thankful that this cervical issue was discovered when we can still potentially do something to bring the babies closer to term, as many people just go into preterm labor and lose their babies before they ever know something is amiss.  Being on bed rest before 24 weeks wasn't really something I had considered, but we will figure it out.  Thankful again that I am not working and that our travel is done.  DH is amazing at taking care of me, as always.  My dad and step mom are coming tomorrow for a quick visit, when DH and dad will put up the nursery wall.

Whether it's a cerclage and/or bed rest that gets us there, we are fighting for these babies.

If you've been on bed rest, what did you do?  I'm thinking over four months, I could write a book, or two... ;)

I spent about 3 weeks on modified bed rest. I did a lot of reading, napping, and trash tv watching.

This is fancy3face again on my main google log in, sorry for all the random log ins I'm posting with!

I started br at home after they found my funneling. I watched a lot of tv, blogged, did some diy baby stuff, scrapbooking, picture editing, talked on the phone, read, etc. You'll be surprised how easy it is just to sleep through bed rest!

When I went on hospital br for PIH (that turned into pre-e) I mainly did the same things. The only good thing about being stuck in a hospital for a month is getting to know the amazing nurses. They kept me sane.

I'm glad you got an appt with a specialist. Praying he/she can find a solid solution that gets you and babies to term (or very close!).

Never been on bedrest, but spent several weeks sick in bed once upon a time.

Writing is a great option. Maybe set aside some time to do this every day.

Obviously, TV and books. Are you a member of your local library?

Do you have a good laptop? If not, consider splurging. Obviously, wireless is a must.

Video games?

Oh, netflix is nice. GIves you a nice variety of things to watch, and watching shows passes a lot of time (as opposed to movies, since there are lots of episodes). You'll need a decent laptop, not a really wimpy netbook, for netflix.

I had pre-term labor at 32 weeks and spent 3 weeks in bed before our daughter was born at 35 weeks. I read and read more. I got through 3 books one week. Spent lots of time online and trying to sleep. I am not much for tv - so I just listened to my ipod for music. I was boring.

Hi there. I started following your blog through the bump. I'm so sorry that you're on bedrest already. Not fun.

I was put on bedrest at 20w with funneling and only .04 cm functional. I made it 3 weeks and had an emergency cerclage at 23w6d after I started to dilate. I spent the rest of my pregnancy in bed. Bedrest was the hardest time of my life. But it was all worth it in the end. Often now, (I have a healthy, happy 15 mo old) I look back and wish that I could have been more productive and enjoyed the time to myself- but I think that's impossible when you're worrying about your precious cargo. It's VERY difficult.

I suggest making a daily routine for yourself, even it just includes TV shows, snacktime, reading time, etc. It really helped alot, although I can't explain why. I also took a few classes online- like the defensive driving class which lowered our car insurance bill.

If you need to talk, or need anything- please reach out to me. If you need uplifting incompetent cervix stories- I have a few blogs that I follow from some bump ladies from around my bedrest stint. Good luck, mama. By doing nothing, you're doing absolutely everything for your little ones.
